SUMMARY:Savouring Sicily
DESCRIPTION:Like gelato\, cannoli\, and chocolate? What about sumptuous pasta and delicious wines grown in volcanic soils? \nWant to explore the cultural mosaic of the Mediterranean’s largest island? How about wandering through medieval castles and visiting baroque masterpieces designated as UNESCO World Heritage sites? \nIf tantalizing treats\, both cultural and gastronomic\, interest you\, join us for a 11-day experience of the culture and foodways of Sicily! \nUnder the experienced guidance of Theresa Moran\, David Bell and Susi Kimbell\, we’ll travel Sicily’s Eastern “Greek” coast to see and taste this unique island’s rich history of food and wine traditions. From our base in Ortigia\, we will trace the diverse influences on Sicily\, from the ancient Greeks to the Arab conquest and the Spanish empire. Greek and Roman ruins\, organic wineries and farms\, along with the vibrant cities of Syracuse and Catania\, will feed both body and soul. \nDuring our time on the island\, we will delve deep into how something so simple as a delicious meal can be a catalyst for cultural identity. We will also learn about the historical and contemporary reach of Sicilian olive oil\, wine\, chocolate. And while we will make sure to sample pistachios\, almonds\, and ricotta\, there will be plenty of time for the lively markets\, the beach\, and relaxing in beautiful piazzas. \nFor more information\, please contact info@exedramc.com

SUMMARY:3rd Winter Workshop on Plato's Republic
DESCRIPTION:PLATO’S REPUBLIC BOOK III\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe best way to understand the genius of Plato’s most famous work is to study it in the Greek. For 2026\, we focus on Republic Book III. \nThe Winter Workshop mixes the best aspects of a philosophy conference and a classical language school. The program combines cultural activities in the mornings and round-table translation and discussion of the text in the afternoons\, ending with short academic presentations about Platonic texts. \nParticipants study on the picturesque island of Ortigia\, where they can visit ancient Greek temples\, cycle in the sunshine or swim in the sea\, and experience the Mediterranean lifestyle. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nResidential workshop\n\n\n\n\nThe workshop dedicated to Plato’s Republic Book III will be held at Exedra’s home in Palazzo Francica Nava\, Ortigia\, the historic centre of Siracusa. \nParticipants will read and translate the text in a roundtable setting while discussing its philosophical content; they may also present papers on related topics. Mornings will be dedicated to site-visits\, a cooking class and other activities in and around Ortigia. \nCompetence reading Ancient Greek is recommended but not required; the instructor will translate and explain as needed. \nThe workshop takes place in scenic Ortigia\, where the winter weather is mild and the island is still in festive mood but peaceful.

SUMMARY:“Competition and Excellence” in Greco-Roman Culture
DESCRIPTION:2025 Interdisciplinary Seminar on “Competition and Excellence” in Greco-Roman Culture \n10th Interdisciplinary Symposium on the Hellenic Heritage of Sicily and Southern Italy \nwith the theme of \n“Athlos\, Athlon\, Athlētēs” \nExedra Mediterranean Center\, Syracuse\, Sicily\, November 24-27\, 2025 \nWith an post-conference tour to Agrigento and Piazza Armerina\, November 28-29 \nCall for Abstracts \nThe stories of ancient Greek heroes like Heracles inspired a competitive culture in which achievement was the product of struggle and effort. To be an athlete (athlētēs) in this context meant taking on a challenge (athlos) for the sake of some prize (athlon)—but it extended far beyond sport. Athletic striving was a feature of oratory\, politics\, jurisprudence\, music\, drama\, education\, and even philosophy\, which understood moral virtue in terms of excellence (aretē). The purpose of this conference is to explore this athletic ethos in sport and far beyond it by reflecting on the phenomenon of competitive striving in a variety of practices at various times and places in Greco-Roman antiquity. \nOur conference takes place at the Exedra Mediterranean Center in Syracuse\, Sicily—the cultural center of Western Greece known by Epicharmus\, Empedocles\, Plato\, Aeschylus\, Sappho\, Theocritus\, Archimedes\, Cicero and many others.  It will include academic presentations\, visits to the Neapolis archeological park and Paolo Orsi museum\, and a post-conference excursion to the archaeological site and museum of ancient Akragas. We will also enjoy traditional Sicilian food and hospitality\, plus an American style Thanksgiving dinner (with families invited) Thursday evening. \nProposals for presentations related to any aspect of the topic are welcome. Abstracts for papers should be 200-300 words in length\, prepared for blind review\, and saved in .docx or .rtf. They should include a title\, but no footnotes or references. Evaluation criteria include quality\, relevance to the conference theme\, and relevance to the heritage of Sicily and Southern Italy. Scholars are welcome to participate without presenting a paper\, and can request to be on the program as a session chair. \n\nSelected proceedings will be published by Parnassos Press and indexed open access on JSTOR. \nSend abstracts directly to Heather L. Reid at fontearetusa1@gmail.com. Abstracts received by July 1\, 2025 will be considered for early acceptance. Final deadline for abstracts is October 1\, 2025.
