SUMMARY:“Competition and Excellence” in Greco-Roman Culture
DESCRIPTION:2025 Interdisciplinary Seminar on “Competition and Excellence” in Greco-Roman Culture \n10th Interdisciplinary Symposium on the Hellenic Heritage of Sicily and Southern Italy \nwith the theme of \n“Athlos\, Athlon\, Athlētēs” \nExedra Mediterranean Center\, Syracuse\, Sicily\, November 24-27\, 2025 \nWith an post-conference tour to Agrigento and Piazza Armerina\, November 28-29 \nCall for Abstracts \nThe stories of ancient Greek heroes like Heracles inspired a competitive culture in which achievement was the product of struggle and effort. To be an athlete (athlētēs) in this context meant taking on a challenge (athlos) for the sake of some prize (athlon)—but it extended far beyond sport. Athletic striving was a feature of oratory\, politics\, jurisprudence\, music\, drama\, education\, and even philosophy\, which understood moral virtue in terms of excellence (aretē). The purpose of this conference is to explore this athletic ethos in sport and far beyond it by reflecting on the phenomenon of competitive striving in a variety of practices at various times and places in Greco-Roman antiquity. \nOur conference takes place at the Exedra Mediterranean Center in Syracuse\, Sicily—the cultural center of Western Greece known by Epicharmus\, Empedocles\, Plato\, Aeschylus\, Sappho\, Theocritus\, Archimedes\, Cicero and many others.  It will include academic presentations\, visits to the Neapolis archeological park and Paolo Orsi museum\, and a post-conference excursion to the archaeological site and museum of ancient Akragas. We will also enjoy traditional Sicilian food and hospitality\, plus an American style Thanksgiving dinner (with families invited) Thursday evening. \nProposals for presentations related to any aspect of the topic are welcome. Abstracts for papers should be 200-300 words in length\, prepared for blind review\, and saved in .docx or .rtf. They should include a title\, but no footnotes or references. Evaluation criteria include quality\, relevance to the conference theme\, and relevance to the heritage of Sicily and Southern Italy. Scholars are welcome to participate without presenting a paper\, and can request to be on the program as a session chair. \n\nSelected proceedings will be published by Parnassos Press and indexed open access on JSTOR. \nSend abstracts directly to Heather L. Reid at fontearetusa1@gmail.com. Abstracts received by July 1\, 2025 will be considered for early acceptance. Final deadline for abstracts is October 1\, 2025.

DESCRIPTION:5th Siracusa Summer Seminar with a focus on Plato’s Theaetetus \nSiracusa\, July 28 – August 8 2025 \nDeadlines: April15 (financial aid); July 1 (registration) \nFaculty: Heather L. Reid (Exedra); George Gazis (Durham)\, Chiara Blanco (Newcastle); Jurgen Gatt (Malta). \nDescription: The Summer Seminar combines instruction in Ancient Greek at different levels with discussion of Plato’s Theaetetus\, and the opportunity to present papers or posters on relevant topics. Mornings are free for swimming in the sea\, jogging around the island\, or optional archeological visits and cultural activities. Evening discussions can be continued at Ortigia’s many bars and restaurants. Instruction is offered at three levels and financial aid is available. \n\n\nGeneral Infomration  \nSkill Levels: Participants are separated by Ancient Greek language skill level for the 3-5 PM sessions\, then come together for the presentations and discussion to follow. \n\nLevel 1 (beginner): Studies Learning Greek with Plato\, I\nLevel 2 (intermediate): Studies Learning Greek with Plato\, II\nLevel 3 (advanced): Studies the Greek text directly\n\n\n\nPresentations: Participants wishing to present papers on the seminar topic are invited to submit abstracts of up to 300 words for consideration when they register.
