art in a flash mob in Piazza Duomo in Siracusa on 18th August to commemorate an episode from local history. The flash mob, “Il Manifesto Infame 1837”, part musical, part play, was written by Salvo Canto and told of the lynching of Giuseppe Schwenzer and his wife Maria, accused of being plague-spreaders by local lawyer Mario Adorno, who was then himself shot for his misdeeds.
The young actors and singers were pushed to perform in the square, an environment very different to the school hall they were accustomed to, and learnt about the challenges of performing in an unpredictable setting, and the rewards of finding an impromptu audience for their show.
